Looking After New Carpet

The old adage that you should leave new carpet for twenty-four hours to ‘settle’ is incorrect. You can vacuum your new carpet straight away. It’s important to note that new carpet will shed small fibres. These fibres become loose, not due to a manufacturing fault, but because they are excess fibres that are not bonded to the carpet backing. Some carpets will shed fibres for longer than others.

Here are some tips to help you keep your carpet looking great:

  • Vacuum weekly
  • Clean up spills as soon as they happen
  • Scoop up solids before cleaning
  • Blot as much liquid as possible using clean white toweling or a paper towel
  • Clean using a recommended spot removal agent for the specific stain
  • Rinse with cold or lukewarm water only
  • Blot dry with an absorbent material such as paper toweling or use cold air fan to complete drying
  • Professionally clean as required.
  • Only steam cleaning is recommended this should generally be done every two years.
  • Never over saturate your carpet as this may cause the Hessian backing to bleed and separate from the carpet.
  • Carpet is best maintained with a Turbo head or Spinning Brush attached to your Vacuum Cleaner.Walking on cut pile carpet will push the pile down and over, creating tracking but cleaned regularly with a Spinning Brush the pile will be pulled back up again. The spinning brush also helps to loosen dirt trapped in the pile.
  • Occasionally, off-the-shelf cleaning products can “set” a stain, making it impossible for a professional to remove. If the stain is serious or you are unsure of what it is, it’s best to call in the experts straight away rather than tackling it yourself.
